Youth Leaders Retreat 2014
A report from Re-Connect!
HeYouth Board President, Chris King shared his reflections on Re-Connect, 2014:
ReConnect Youth Leader Retreat
This year’s ReConnect retreat took place again in Columbus, OH from March 14-16 and was again graciously hosted by Orange Friends Church. Youth Leaders from 14 EFC churches gathered for the weekend to rejuvenate and be challenged to see their ministry as an outflow of their own spiritual walk and their own personal life rhythms. Through great times of fellowship around café tables, times sharing with friends from other churches during meals, and time spent in reflective periods of worship lead by Brian Donahue (Jackson Friends) and Scott Calhoun (Canton Friends) it was a great weekend to grow with each other as well as look into our own hearts. We heard from 4 different main session speakers during the weekend, each one speaking on a theme around caring for the youth worker’s own spiritual health. Quint Bryan (EFC-ER Youth Specialist) began the weekend on Friday night sharing biblical principals around creating boundaries and margins in our lives. Pastor David Mabry and his wife Theresa (Orange Friends Church) shared an interactive session on Saturday morning about how to grow and maintain healthy relationships; both inside and outside of our ministry contexts. Dr. Wayne Evans (EFC-ER General Superintendent) was able to come be a part of the weekend on Saturday night and share about our perspective in ministry; focusing on our depth perception and how we need Jesus’ help in seeing the ministry before each one of us for what it truly is. Finally, Pastor Mark Winner (Cornerstone Friends) challenged the youth leaders about how we develop our own faith and continue to grow in our walks with Christ.
Several others leaders helped to provide elective workshops on relevant topics for those working with teenagers. Steve Heilshorn (Trinity Van Wert) spoke on making our church’s youth ministry more family based, Zach Bohler (North Olmstead) lead a group on how to use and not use technology and social media in our ministries, and Scott “Moby” Dick (Jackson Friends) lead a session on relational ministry. This was also a special weekend because Youth Board President Julie Martin was honored for her 5 years of service and her years of administrative help with putting this weekend retreat together.
There was so much to be grateful for with what God whispered into our hearts during the course of the retreat, and we are truly appreciative to all those who came and shared in the weekend to make it what it was. We would encourage more of our northern EFC-ER churches to send their youth workers to this refreshing weekend to help them be refilled for more fruitful ministry. For our southern EFC-ER churches, our Youth Board is excited to encourage you be looking for a new event next Spring that mirrors ReConnect for all those for which Columbus is too far a trip.
