East Richland Friends Initiates "40 Days of Purpose" with a Flourish
“Forty-Days of Purpose” campaign began in January as our children and adults carried banners in our Worship Services alerting our church family of the February 21st simulcast. One hundred thirty extra large pizzas (that’s 1,560 pieces!) were served to over 750 people on Saturday, February 21st, as East Richland Friends gathered for the live “Forty Days of Purpose” simulcast from Boston, Massachusetts.

Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in California, challenged all to participate in an adventure of Christian life-style based on God’s eternal purposes, not cultural values. Five hundred fifty “40 Day” tee shirts were given to everyone present - toddlers through adults.

Five hundred sixty copies of The Purpose Driven Life were distributed, without cost, at the close of the simulcast which was viewed by 2,700 churches throughout the United States. Following the simulcast, participants signed commitment slips and placed them on the altar. They were committed to attending the seven Sundays of the campaign and participating in a small group.

Participants were divided into 41 small groups which met at various times during the week to view a video message and discuss the topics of “What on earth Am I Here For? –Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry, Evangelism.” Every department – preschool, children, youth, and adult – participated in the “Forty Days of Purpose” with an increased attendance seen in all areas.

Over 130 volunteers were involved in planning the large events, hosting or leading the small groups. Celebration Sunday was held on Sunday evening, April 4th at the new Jim Carnes Center where a catered dinner was served to over 560 people! The culmination of the evening’s event was the baptism of 57 individuals. The excitement and growth continues as small groups meet weekly.
