Pastor Dale Dragomir of Hunter Hills Friends Church in Greensboro, NC, was grateful at how God chose to work through the teachers at their new school, Pendle Hill. The following is shared to encourage all teachers and parents. Dear Pendle Hills School, I would like to take a moment to let you and the teachers, staff, church and all supporters of Pendle Hill Friends School know how much this school has meant to my son and me. He joined Pendle Hill in 3rd grade. In the first grade at a public school, he was diagnosed with AD/ADHD and by the 2nd grade was withdrawing from school, kids and his family. He was placed in the typical special programs, and we watched him slip farther and farther into himself. We were told that he would always struggle with reading and spelling and to obtain extra assistance for him in these areas. Our son knows he is different and all these tactics made him feel more different and he began to hate school and he had no friends. Due to redistricting, we were told that he would be moved to another school for the beginning of his 3rd grade. But, through divine intervention, I heard of your school and there was an opening for him to attend Pendle Hill. He entered as an insecure, frightened and self-loathing child. He did not have any friends and he hated school. What is hard for most people to understand is how much our son changed in only 3 months. He began to participate in class and he began to talk to me about school in positive terms. Before Halloween he had four friends and he had his very first party at our house, a Halloween party with friends! I wish you could have seen how excited he was about that party. He still talks about it. By Christmas, he was enjoying reading and could not wait to go to school. He became so motivated that his behavior at home improved. During this process, our son also found his faith roots and that first Christmas was the most meaningful one ever had as a family, only because he finally felt the true love of God. On a very personal note, up to that point in his life, our son was not able to show love. During that holiday season, for the first time in his life, he told me and more importantly, showed me, he loved his family and me. The only reason he changed is Pendle Hill. Yes, as his parents we work to make him into a better person, but Pendle Hill has given him the confidence he needed to find himself. He ended the 3rd grade with high marks, friends, a love of reading and an enthusiasm for school. He attended 4th grade and blossomed even more. The child that was “always going to need extra help with spelling” got 100’s on all of his spelling tests! His creativity and interests are growing because his teachers talk to him, take time to listen to him and honestly enjoy his energy and ability to think differently. It is because of the low ratios, special teachers and focus on faith that he knows he has a special place on this earth. He looks at his ADD as a gift now, not a disability. He compares himself to other famous people with ADD so the world is his oyster! Yes he is learning, but more importantly Pendle Hill has saved my son’s soul and because of this wonderful school my child loves himself and the world around him. Sent from a Grateful Mother
