Refresh our memories... Strengthen our hearts... Renew our ministries Greetings in the precious name of Jesus Christ to Friends around the world! "Refresh our Memories, Strengthen our Hearts, Renew our Ministries" was the theme of the 189th Yearly Meeting. What a blessing these days have been! Two missionary banquets were attended by about 700 adults. Youth and children have separate programs. There were missionaries and national leaders from Eastern Europe, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Taiwan and Texas (Hispanic ministry) at the banquets. Missions continues to be a vital ministry of Eastern Region. At the Sunday evening service, Dr. John Williams, Jr. challenged us to "Trust the Lord of the Impossible." He urged us to behold His glory, listen to Him, look into His face, and relocate our trust. The concert of praise and prayer was a time of blessing and encouragement. Following this, Dr. John Williams gave his General Superintendent's report. The Ministerial Accreditation Board recommended 6 people to be recorded in the Wednesday evening service. They were Curt Blasiman, David Householder, Fred Kensler, Todd Roberts, Mark Winner and John VanLal. John Downs was accepted by transfer. Friends Action Board provides information to encourage us to be pro-life and peacemakers. It also encourages us to protect children from pornography and obscenity. There was a workshop to help churches know how to minister to homosexuals, how to deal with pro-gay theology, those sexually abused and broken and sexual addictions. Resources are available to help minister to other social needs. The Communication Commission report told us that there are several web sites on - www.efcer.org. They give information about our superintendents, a directory of pastors and churches, mission focus for the month, Camp Gideon pictures and programs, Yearly Meeting events and the Facing Bench. Visits to the web site continue to grow and are visited both internationally and nationally. Friends Disaster Service ministered in Honduras, El Salvador, North Carolina and Ohio after hurricanes, earthquakes, fire, floods and tornado damage. People are helped, blessed, encouraged and brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus as a result of this loving ministry. The Malone College report was a blessing as we heard of spiritual growth among students, faculty and staff. Enrollment has remained over 2000. Malone's academic areas have been reorganized into schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, Continuing Studies, Education, Nursing, Theology and The Graduate School. This year 165 students were involved in 13 mission trips. Eastern Region youth are ministered to in their local church youth groups and in summer camps. They also have discipleship training and participate in service projects by helping needy people. Children are taught God's Word and about mission work through Sunday School, children's church, VBS and summer camps. Following a time of sharing and ministry through music at the piano and vocally, Dr. Richard Allen Farmer, dean of the Chapel at Taylor University, challenged us on Monday evening concerning "The Lure of Lowered Standards". Dr. Farmer exhorted us not to tamper with the place of worship, the personnel of worship, or the particulars of worship. Tuesday evening's speaker was Dr. Joe Roher, pastor of Friendswood Friends Church in Friendswood, Texas and former pastor of Canton First Friends Church. Dr. Roher so powerfully reminded us that God loves us intensely, God wraps us around with encouragement, and God infuses us in hope. In Christ's Service, |
