“One Thing”

September 17, 2003

How often do you feel pressed, pressured and up against multiple demands, not all of which can be met at the same time?

Too often, I imagine.

As I write this to you, I am coming out of several hours like that myself.

Sometimes, we simply have to admit, "I can't do it all right now. But I can take care of one thing at a time and, Lord Jesus, I do desire that you lead me and live in me and help me to focus on what truly matters most."

Jesus spoke reassuringly to Mary and Martha about the demands of life. What sounds at first like a put-down to Martha is actually an invitation to her and to each of us. Here's how Jesus put it to a pressure-plagued, distracted Martha: "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed . . . " (Luke 10:41-42a)

That indispensable, "one thing" Jesus speaks about seems to be fellowship with Him, listening to His voice, receiving His love and His word.

And that's still the "one thing" truly needed.

Wish I could say more, but I have to go for an appointment.

"Lord Jesus, in the activity, in the push of this day, lead me. Lead us. We want to hear you, love you, obey you, enjoy you. We're listening."

Yours and His,
John
