Four short years ago, the EFC-ER Mission Board had a vision of ministry in Eastern Europe. With no direct contacts, the Mission Board sent Dr. John Williams, Jr. and Pastor Jim Ogden to visit Hungary and pray. God led them to Pali Katona, a dedicated believer, with a desire to plant churches in his homeland. Since that time, God has opened doors in miraculous ways. In four years, we have 24 churches: 2 are Hungarian and 12 are Gypsy.
Today in Hungary:
- 1250 people fellowship in EFC-Hungary Churches.
- Two Mission Centers/Camps
- Refugee Camp Ministry
The gypsies live in extreme poverty because for generations, they have stolen to survive. Those who try to find honorable work, usually fail because most locals consider gypsies a subclass of thieves to be despised. They are cast out of society into their own poverty-stricken areas with inadequate housing. Most have one-bedroom homes housing at least 10 people. (They receive $20 per month if there are 10 or more people living in a residence.) Most homes have no running water or gas or fuel. Often the homes are beyond poor Ð they are dirty and not maintained. Imre (our Friends leader in the area) explained that because they have no hope for a better life, they lose interest in how they live each day.
Our Gypsy Friends Churches (over 26 in all) are reaching out giving the message of salvation and hope in Jesus. They are learning cleanliness and how to be healthy. At a glance, one can see the difference Christ is making in their homes and their lives. They have found a new hope, a hope that leads to practical, life-changing habits that will affect generations yet to come!
EFC-ER, in cooperation with EFC-Hungary has completed a Youth Outreach Center, dedicated to ministry among the gypsies in Hencida. Through your prayers and support, God is reaching out to the Gypsy People. Continue to pray for their leaders, and that economic doors will open.
