Malone College Freshman Experience "Into The Streets"
New students at Malone became acquainted with the Stark County community and its volunteer opportunities as a vital part of their college orientation. The program, called Into the Streets offers incoming Malone College students a chance to discover volunteer opportunities from which to choose throughout their college careers while providing more than 2500 volunteer hours to local agencies and organizations within the 2-day period.Into the Streets was developed in 1995 by Marcia Everett, director of the humanities program at Malone, in an
effort to incorporate volunteerism as part of the College learning experience while instilling in the student a sense of the larger community beyond the campus. Students are introduced to a wide variety of community volunteer opportunities in hopes that volunteerism will become a lifelong habit. The students volunteered at a wide variety of organization throughout Stark County including camps, local outreach missions, Habitat for Humanity, preschools, senior centers, community centers, parks, libraries, Pregnancy Support Center, a wilderness center and even the county humane society. Their volunteer hours included painting, yard work, landscaping, clearing trails, visiting with senior citizens, removing trash and debris, general cleaning, playing with children and animals, preparing packets or mailings, and more.
