Participation in Community Parade leads to Recognition and Increased Outreach

Smithfield's Booth
It started as a simple float in the local Apple Festival Parade. The participants from Smithfield Friends Church in Smithfield, Ohio entered a float entitled, "American Gothic" featuring a couple standing in front of a little white church (instead of the traditional farm couple in front of a barn).

Over 27 members walked the parade route passing out candy in their bright green T-shirts imprinted with Smithfield Friends Church. "We won second place in the float competition and were awarded a monetary prize of $25.00 which we donated to the church," explained Pastor Bob Carson. "What a way to start our presence in the community.

"Many people stopped by their booth for free water and soft drinks and to collect information about the church. The next few Sundays found new people joining their worship services.

Smithfield's Float won second place in the Apple Festival this summer. Jim and Janet Branscom standing, Joan Boyd is sitting down on the rear of the float.

An unexpected bonus came when the village officials contacted the church, offering to add support forthe church's Fall Festival, to be held on Sunday, October 31st as an alternative to the traditional Halloween activities. Plans for the day quickly expanded into a carnival-type event with additional participation in the form of local radio coverage, carnival rides, moon bounce rides, and even free refreshments!

Smithfield Friends Church was thrilled with the planning and even more elated with the response to their Fall Festival. They prepared for 400 participants, expecting to have around 150 - 200. All were humbled and amazed when they welcomed over 350 people from the community to their Fall Festival.

"What a way to renew our presence in the community. We began with a simple float and a few volunteers passing out candy, and it multiplied!" Pastor Bob Carson added, "Weʼre grateful that God is blessing our ministry."
